Los Angeles Lakers Make Headlines with Luka Doncic Trade and New Roster Moves
The Los Angeles Lakers have been at the center of NBA news in recent weeks, following a blockbuster trade that brought superstar Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks. In a series of strategic roster moves, the team also sent rookie Dalton Knecht to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for center Mark Williams. Now, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Lakers have secured another addition post-trade deadline: point guard Jordan Goodwin.
Strengthening the Roster with Jordan Goodwin
Goodwin joins the Lakers on a two-way contract after playing for the South Bay Lakers, the team’s G League affiliate. Since the Lakers had already reached the NBA’s three-player limit on two-way deals, they had to release forward Armel Traore to make room.
Goodwin spent most of last season in NBA rosters but has been playing in the G League for the 2024/25 season. In 17 games, he has averaged 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3 assists per game, showcasing his versatility as a guard.
The 25-year-old has prior NBA experience with three different teams before joining Los Angeles: the Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, and Washington Wizards. Across 121 career games, Goodwin holds averages of 6.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He is expected to round out the Lakers' roster, which is now at full capacity. However, the team retains the flexibility to waive a player if another key acquisition becomes available.
Luka Doncic Set to Make His Lakers Debut
Doncic, the centerpiece of the Lakers' trade deadline activity, is expected to make his debut for Los Angeles on Monday, February 8. The Slovenian star has been sidelined since Christmas due to a calf strain.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick spoke about Doncic’s upcoming return, emphasizing patience. “We are all excited for this moment—fans, players, and staff alike. However, we want to ensure he feels confident, and that our medical team is fully assured before rushing anything,” Redick said.
The Aftermath of the Anthony Davis Trade
To accommodate Doncic’s arrival, the Lakers parted ways with star big man Anthony Davis. Recognizing the need for a strong presence in the paint, the franchise made a last-minute trade with the Charlotte Hornets, acquiring Mark Williams. The Lakers sent Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and a future first-round pick to Charlotte as part of the deal. Sources suggest that Doncic himself requested the addition of Williams to bolster the team's interior defense.
Lakers’ Playoff Push
The Lakers are currently fifth in the Western Conference standings with a record of 30-29, riding a strong wave of momentum. The team has won eight of its last ten games, positioning itself as a serious playoff contender.
With Doncic’s debut on the horizon and strategic roster adjustments in place, the Lakers are gearing up for an intense second half of the season, with hopes of making a deep playoff run. Stay tuned for more updates on the Lakers’ journey to the postseason.
